The day has finally come. Nintendo is making the jump to your smartphone.
Nintendo recently announced that they will start creating new games for mobile devices via a partnership with developer DeNA (pronounced D-N-A). These games will not be re-hashed versions of Nintendo classics such as Super Mario Bros. or Tetris but “new original games optimized for smart device functionality.” In other words, it looks like we might be seeing our favorite Nintendo characters enter the realm of mobile gaming in all new finger tapping adventures sooner than later!
Nintendo’s partnership with DeNA is will complement Nintendo’s dedicated video game systems business, not replace it, and extend Nintendo’s reach into the vast market of smart device users worldwide. The move is a smart one as Nintendo has run into trouble in the past few years financially as more and more people turn to mobile phones to play games.
Nintendo and DeNA also plan to develop an online membership service that is accessible from smart devices, PC and Nintendo systems, such as the Nintendo 3DS portable system and the Wii U home console. This membership service is set to launch in the fall of 2015, and could be the reason why Nintendo is discontinuing the club Nintendo program.
With Nintendo now entering the mobile market, what games do you want to see on your smartphone?
